Newman Scholars

A Certificate in Integral Catholic Leadership

Gopher Catholic has partnered with Anselm House (a center for Christian thought at the University of Minnesota) to offer UMN students a 3-year program of comprehensive spiritual, intellectual, and moral formation, culminating in a certificate of Integral Catholic Leadership. Students aiming to complete this certificate are called Newman Scholars; they participate both in the residential formation program at Gopher Catholic as well as the Anselm House Fellows Program.

The Newman Scholars program allows students to belong to a community of disciples and receive personalized formation in the Catholic faith, while also attending a premier, public research university.

  • The staff of both Gopher Catholic and Anselm House are here to help you through the Newman Scholar experience.

  • Check out our residential program! We rent several houses near campus where students can live together.

  • Get to know Christian professors at the University of Minnesota and other Christian academics in the Twin Cities.

  • All-year access to a variety of resources.

  • Joining Newman Scholars not only provides the opportunity to meet other individuals striving for excellence but establishes long-lasting connections well beyond college.

Application Process

Both incoming and current UMN students can begin the application process for a certificate in Integral Catholic Leadership. Students must apply separately and be admitted to both (1) Anselm House’s fellows program and (2) Gopher Catholic’s residential formation program.

  • 1) Apply to the AH Fellows Program

To apply to the Anselm House Fellows Program, please complete the online application with Anselm House and indicate your desire to be involved in the fellows program as a Newman Scholar.

  • 2) Apply to the GC Residential Program

As a preliminary step, incoming and current students must fill out the Newman Scholars Interest Form. Students should apply to the Gopher Catholic Residential Program during the fall of their freshman or sophomore year.

  • 3 ) Admisson to Newman Scholars

Students admitted to both the Anselm House Fellows Program and the Gopher Catholic residential formation program (typically in their second or third year at the UMN) are known as Newman Scholars.
